Seven and eight Castle Street stand in Hay, Powys, marked as a Post Medieval house in the national record. That much is clear. Whether the walls still hold the shape of the rooms that made them worthy of listing, or whether they have become ordinary again after decades of private use, is not known. The number itself suggests a narrow street where houses faced one another and a front door could be judged by its position as much as its decoration.
