Settlement deserted

Bellhill in County Offaly holds a double-banked enclosure, a low motte, and the broken base of a round tower, all belonging to a fifth-century foundation attributed to St Kieran the Elder. The earthworks later absorbed secular power, perhaps even a gun turret during sixteenth-century turbulence, while the priory itself decayed into a thatched stone house and six cottages. What began as a sacred monastic landscape became a layered military and administrative site before emptying entirely, leaving only ramparts and faint footings for anyone willing to walk its perimeter slowly.
