Ballycarroll was already a lived town in 1577 when Robert Pigott received its lands, though no marker remains to show where its streets ran. The name appeared again in 1607 during an inquisition at Maryborough, written as Bally-kerrold, proving the place stayed distinct enough to be named separately. Whatever homes or fields filled it, they belonged to people busy with ordinary life long before the boundary was forgotten.
