Settlement cluster in Ballycarroll (maryborough East By.)

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

Ballycarroll was already a lived town in 1577 when Robert Pigott received its lands, though no marker remains to show where its streets ran. The name appeared again in 1607 during an inquisition at Maryborough, written as Bally-kerrold, proving the place stayed distinct enough to be named separately. Whatever homes or fields filled it, they belonged to people busy with ordinary life long before the boundary was forgotten.
Unlocated settlement within townland, mentioned as the 'towne and lands of Ballycarroll alias Bally-kerrold' in an inquisition of the lands of Robert Pigott of the Disarte in Queen's Co. taken at Maryborough on the 7th September 1607, who received these lands in the 19th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth (1577).(O'Flanagan 1933, vol.1, p. 97) Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 17 December 2007
