Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill was born in Churchtown, County Cork, in 1691, and later became the respected convenor of the Maigue Poets. He chaired gatherings at Lios Ollium and his own home near Charleville, earning the title Chief Poet of Munster despite writing little. His lament Mo Ghile Mear captured the despair following the defeat at Culloden in 1746, preserving the heartbreak of Gaelic hopes crushed in a single disastrous afternoon.
