Scullabogue Barn massacre

Scullabogue Barn holds the only massacre in the 1798 rebellion where rebels killed women and children, burning up to two hundred prisoners after defeated soldiers returned shouting that British troops had burned wounded men at New Ross. The guards surrendered to the angry crowd, shooting some victims before torching the barn and driving escaping people back into the flames. Two men crawled from the fire, while twelve participants later faced execution, leaving a place where desperate fear turned into monstrous revenge.
