School

What is recorded here

In 1622, by a grant of James I, John Stern was appointed schoolmaster of the public school in Cavan. He was to hold it 'during good behaviour in as beneficial and ample a form' as his predecessor Alexander Julius (Calender Patent Rolls, James I, 528). While this public school may possibly be one and the same as that decreed by the Plantation commissioners (CV020-055007-), the above reference indicates that there was a school already in existence within Cavan Town prior to 1622. It is possible that it is the same as the free school (CV020-055007) established on the site of the Franciscan friary (CV020-055002-). Date of upload: 11 April, 2018

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
