St. Mary’s Church and the Black Abbey in Kilkenny hold similar limestone panels with pointed trefoil arches, suggesting a regional craft rather than a one-off mistake. A dead friar, a noblewoman or a forgotten abbot may have slept beneath one of thesearches before the tomb broke apart. The chamber no longer exists, but the panel still displays the shape of the disappearance.

In St Francis' Abbey (KK019-026101-). A limestone panel (L 0.36m; H 0.24m; D 0.13m) decorated with two pointed trefoil arches in low relief. It is dressed with vertical tooling using a claw chisel (Duffy 2025, no. 5). Duffy suggests it is a side panel from a sarcophagus, similar to examples in St Mary’s parish church and the Black Abbey (ibid.). Bradley (1980, 15, no. 57) describes this panel as being ‘probably part of a table tomb’. It is very similar to another panel (KK019-026549-) from St Francis’ Abbey. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
