Sarah Mary Fitton

Sarah Mary Fitton was born in Dublin around 1796, the daughter of an attorney and the sister of a physician who would become a geologist. She wrote Conversations on Botany with her sister Elizabeth in 1817, framing scientific taxonomy as a domestic conversation between a mother and her son. The book helped make plant identification feel like a joyful pursuit for women rather than a distant male profession. Fitton later lived in Paris, where she continued writing instructional books and stories for children until her death in 1874.
