Frances Elizabeth Bellenden Clarke entered the world in Rosebank House, Donaghadee, County Down, Ireland on 10 June 1854. She later became Sarah Grand, an Irish-English feminist writer whose work championed the New Woman ideal. Her early life moved from Donaghadee to Bridlington, England after her father died, shaping the perseverance that carried her into a writing career lasting until 1922.
