Sandal Castle rose near Wakefield as a Norman motte and bailey, later crowned by a stone shell keep that still defines its silhouette. It served the earls and dukes of Somerset before becoming a royal castle, anchoring regional defence and administration through the medieval centuries. The mound, ditches and bailey remain visible, preserving the shape of a household that once commanded the surrounding land.
