Sandal Castle: motte and bailey castle and shell keep castle

Scheduled monument

What is recorded here

Sandal Castle rose near Wakefield as a Norman motte and bailey, later crowned by a stone shell keep that still defines its silhouette. It served the earls and dukes of Somerset before becoming a royal castle, anchoring regional defence and administration through the medieval centuries. The mound, ditches and bailey remain visible, preserving the shape of a household that once commanded the surrounding land.
The National Heritage List for England records Sandal Castle: motte and bailey castle and shell keep castle as a scheduled monument. The saved point comes from the centre supplied by the official record. Listing does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Sandal Castle was built by the de Lacy family in the late 12th century and later held by the Crown. It is important as a well-preserved example of both motte and bailey and shell keep castle architecture, reflecting the evolution of medieval military design.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
