Saddell Castle stands on the Kilbrannan Sound where a trap door once dropped unwanted visitors into a dungeon with no exits. Built from abbey ruins in the early 1500s, it passed through Hamilton hands before returning to the MacDonald family, who lost it to English fire in 1558 and later reclaimed its identity through memory. Today the Landmark Trust preserves the stones while Clan Donald members still travel there, carrying the castle across oceans and generations.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Saddell Castle as Castle (medieval), Drain(s) (17th Century) - (18th Century), Midden (17th Century) - (18th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Saddell Castle was built by the MacDowalls, a minor noble family of Kintyre, in the 13th or 14th century. It is remembered as a strategic stronghold in the region and for its later association with the Campbells of Argyll during the 17th century.
