Rubha Dubh is a basaltic sea cliff formed during the Tertiary period, approximately 60 to 55 million years ago, as a result of volcanic activity associated with the North Atlantic Igneous Province. It is notable for its dramatic coastal exposure of columnar jointing, typical of ancient lava flows in the Western Isles.
