What is recorded here

Roughcastle Fireclay Works and Mine turned local clay into fire bricks from the nineteenth through the twentieth century, sustaining industry with heat-resistant material. The site combined underground digging, open casting and brick making, suggesting a busy place where labour, fire and clay shaped daily life. Its exact boundary and ownership are no longer visible, but the work remains recorded at a precise point in Falkirk.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Roughcastle Fireclay Works and Mine as Clay Mine (period Unassigned), Fire Brick Works (19th Century) - (20th Century), Open Cast Mine (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
