Roper Castle or Round Table (Roman Signal Station)

Archaeological place

What is recorded here

Roman soldiers watched the valley from Roper Castle, sending fire or smoke across dark hills while men below forgot the shape of the sky. The round table name suggests a later gathering place, perhaps a hall, a meeting stone or a local joke about Romans learning to sit down. Either way the site keeps doing both jobs: warning, and remembering that warning is not the same as understanding.
Roper Castle or Round Table (Roman Signal Station) is shown as a archaeological place on the public map of Westmorland and Furness. The saved point is the map point or the centre of its mapped shape.
