Maiden Castle is the largest Iron Age hill fort in Britain, spanning forty-seven acres of Dorset chalk. Around 450 BC the Durotriges tripled its size and layered ramparts, creating a maze where ordinary villages became obsolete. The Romans later abandoned the military knot, yet a temple still rose on the hill in the fourth century before agriculture swallowed the memory of weapons.
