Hazelwood Castle stands beside a Roman road in North Yorkshire, marked as a scheduled monument. The road cut through the landscape long before the castle rose, carrying soldiers, merchants or messages along a straight line drawn by imperial hands. Whether the castle later watched the road or the road passed the castle is unclear, but both belong to the same ground. The list protects the site; it does not invite every visitor across the land.
