What is recorded here

Rathgeran is a granite slab where eight groups of concentric circles still mark the rock. The largest group has seven circles, with an outer diameter of about half a metre. The circles are closely spaced, like rings dropped into quiet water. They may have counted seasons, recorded events, or simply pleased the person who struck them.

The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
