A flat-topped boulder sits on five stones in Cavan, not like a rock that fell but like a table that someone carried. Its top holds shallow cup-marks, and its underside hides eleven more, as if the maker wanted the earth to keep a share of the pattern. Perhaps it was a place for pouring, counting, remembering or warning. The boulder still invites that doubt, which is why it remains alive instead of dead.
