What is recorded here

Orpen found a single cup-and-circle on a rock at Ballinvownig in 1908, but the stone vanished from local memory before anyone could protect it. The mark may have been a boundary, a gift, or a joke thrown against heaven. It still exists somewhere under grass, waiting for a hungry eye.
Orpen (1908, 12-3) discovered a single cup-and-circle on a rock at Ballinvownig. There is now no local knowledge of this stone and its exact location has not been identified. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 173. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 4 August 2013
