An Gabhlán Ard is a smooth, fractured sandstone boulder in mountain heath where five faint cup-and-ring motifs still mark a broad western surface. The stones sit on a south-facing slope overlooking the Owenalondrig River valley, with narrow views reaching toward Acres Point and Trá Chathail. Whoever cut those shallow rings worked beside open sky, perhaps guiding others across heath or marking a place where land, water and memory met.
In mountain heath (192m), on a S-facing slope. Good views SE-> S->SW of Owenalondrig River valley and overlooked by mountains and hills S->N->SE. Narrow view of sea to SE at Acres Point and to SW at Trá Chathail. A very substantial and conspicuous sandstone boulder (dims. 2.25m NNW-SSE; 0.8m ENE-WSW) which is smooth and fractured. It has a sub-oval decorated surface (dims. 3.1m NNW-SSE; 2.95m ENE-WSW) with a W-facing aspect. There are five traceable motifs which are very faint and weathered. There is a cup-and-ring motif (diam. 20cm) having a cup (diam. 5cm; D 7mm), located at N-edge of decorated surface. A very faint cup-and-ring motif (diam. 13cm) having a cup (diam. 5.5cm; D 7mm) is situated at NW-edge of decorated surface; A gently curving groove (L c. 35cm; Wth 1cm; D 2mm) is adjacent to W and a single cupmark is c. 12cm to N. An oval cupmark (dims. 5cm x 4cm; Dth 10mm) at S end of decorated surface, may have faint traces of a ring, although this is not definitive. Rock art (KE044-029002-) is c. 260m to SW.
