On flat bog with good views in all directions, Derrynaflan church (TS054-002----) and a togher (TS054-075----) located 350m and 100m to the SW and S respectively. Scattered remains of several trackways on surface of bog. At least four toghers connecting the bog islands of Derrynaflan to Derrynabrone were discovered by Ó Floinn in 1987 at a depth of 1.1m below the surface of the bog. These were uncovered during peat-milling operations on this bog. One of these was excavated and consisted of a trackway (Wth 1m) made from ash or hazel branches (max. L 4m; T 0.04-0.16m) laid in a single layer and held in place by vertical posts set 0.5m apart. Analysis of the pollen suggested a prehistoric date probably from the Bronze Age for these tracks (Ó Floinn 1988, 25). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 26 August 2011
