This togher is decribed in the 'Archaeological Survey of the Barony of Ikerrin' as follows:
The remains of a wooden trackway reported to be 3 miles from Monaincha was investigated by Mr. Breandán Ó Ríordáin, N.M.I., in July 1957. The exact location of this site is not known and it may possibly lie outside the barony. This trackway ran in a north-south direction through an extensive area of bogland apparently heading for Ballaghmore, Co.Laois, in the north, and Knock, in the south. It lay at a distance of 1.55m below the present bog surface and consisted of two plank or beam lengths laid down side by side in a horizontal position in the bog. The planks measured 37cm and 35cm in width and 7cm in thickness. A pile of stakes measuring 1.25m long had been driven into the bog at a point of the junction of the two planks, which kept the planks from sinking into the underlying bog. An analysis of the material making up the togher was completed by Ms. Maura Scannel which indicated that the planks were made of oak and a sample of the stakes were of ash (Topographical Files, National Museum of Ireland).' (Stout 1984, 138).
The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
