Road

Close to S bank of the Dalgin River in an extensive tract of bogland. In the course of deep ploughing the bog during land reclamation, a local farmer came across what he described as a roadway (Wth 2.5m) paved with thin sandstone slabs. This lay c. 0.3m below the surface of the bog but at least 1m of the bog had already been removed. Uncovered at various points over a distance of 200-300m, it followed a roughly E-W axis. A horizontal watermill (GA004-016----) lies c. 100m to ENE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. A Neolithic trackway; constructed during the early to middle Neolithic period (c. 4000–3000 BCE). It represents an early form of infrastructure for traversing wetland environments and provides insight into prehistoric land use and engineering.
