Road

Originally recorded as a togher complex (L 12.5m) orientated NNW-SSE and evident both on the field surface and in a drain face (Dunne 1999, 14, 99DR0001A). The remains consisted of a number of separate features, which may or may not have been part of one overall togher. Excavation in 2001 revealed the togher (L 60m; Wth 3.5m) to be Neolithic in date (2916 BC), orientated NE-SW, and composed of roundwood (diam. 0.08-0.15m) with a base of brushwood (diam. av. 0.03m) (Whitaker 2009, 14). The upper surface was constructed of approximately 30 relatively large roundwoods placed longitudinally. The layers were compacted together to form a stable walking surface across the bog.
