Death and memory still circle the Burying Bush near County Galway. It stands beside an old burial ground, perhaps one of the hawthorns marking a field boundary, yet local people have always spoken of it as a place where the dead are acknowledged. The bush does not need grandeur; its name does the work. To walk past it is to enter a world where living people still make room for those no longer breathing.

Associated with a burial ground (GA105-008----). A bush, known locally as a ‘Burying Bush’, stands in close proximity to the burial ground (information from E. Rynne).
