What is recorded here
Rinclevan Ringfort is a shallow, saucer-shaped mound beside Rinclevan Strand, large enough for a small fortress but so worn that no wall, gate or chamber remains visible. Local tradition still claims an underground passage exists beneath it, yet the entrance has vanished or was never more than a warning repeated until it became a fact. Cattle graze around the mound today, trusting the ground because no one can point to the hole, the rope or the body that first revealed the passage.
Diam. 25m-30m. Marked as a single-ringed enclosure on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map. What remains is an inverted saucer-shaped platform, 2m in maximum height. It is not possible to say if this mound is artificial or natural or a combination of both. The Man-made underground passage, the existence of which is attested locally, is not visible. The site is on low-lying ground close to Rinclevan Strand. An artificially created 'New Lake' comes almost to the base of the mound on the S. There is good grazing available about the site today.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
