Richard Maunsell, the seventh son of a prominent Dublin solicitor, was born in Raheny in 1868 before becoming the chief mechanical engineer who reshaped British railway locomotives. A young man with legal training but an engineering heart, he climbed from apprentice to foreman, endured a refused marriage proposal, and carried his skills to India before returning to lead the Southern Railway. Raheny gave him life; the railways gave that life direction.
