Richard Marshal, 3rd Earl of Pembroke, died inside Kilkenny Castle on 15 April 1234, bringing a great Irish March to a sudden close. The castle may have felt like a foreign chamber for a man shaped by English courts, French homage and Breton campaigns, yet it became the last address of his life. His death also exposed the reach of the Marshal name, stretching from Pembroke to Kilkenny and leaving others to inherit the consequences of that distance.
