Richard Houston, born in County Dublin around 1721, became a London mezzotint engraver whose dark plates captured the faces of kings, dukes, and revolutionaries. He arrested in the Fleet prison for debt, yet emerged to carve George III and Queen Charlotte into permanent shadow. His death in Hetton Street in 1775 ended a life spent translating light into ink, leaving behind portraits that still breathe through paper.
