Richard de Clare, Steward of Forest of Essex, died at the Battle of Dysert O'Dea on 10 May 1318. Legend claims he saw a woman in white washing bloody clothes the day before, hearing her say they were his before she vanished. He kept his promise to fight, fell in the battle, and left behind a young son whose claim passed to his father's sisters.
