Richard Cameron and James Renwick blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Cameron Monument. The monument opposite marks the original site of the Market Cross of Sanquhar. On 22nd June 1680, Richard Cameron and his followers rode into Sanquhar and affixed to the cross his declaration disowning Charles II as King. This act was to result in the Battle of Airds Moss on 20th July and although the covenanters fought bravely they were overcome by government Dragoons. Eight Covenanters including Richard Cameron were killed. In 1685 James Renwick made the second declaration at the cross which led to his execution in Edinburgh at the Grassmarket.
