Sanquhar Castle rose from steep ground above the River Nith after the Crichton family began building it around 1400, creating a walled stronghold with a tall keep and outer courtyard. Thomas Dickson once stormed the earlier castle in a wood cart, killed its guards, and helped William Wallace defeat 3,000 English soldiers, giving the place a reputation for violent surprise. Later owners included the Douglas family and the Marquis of Bute, whose unfinished restoration left behind a strange mixture of old stone, new work and decay.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Sanquhar Castle as Castle (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Sanquhar Castle was built in the 13th century by the Maxwell family, a powerful Scottish noble clan. It is remembered for its role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and as the site of the 1685 trial of the Regicides, English Parliamentarians executed for their part in Charles I's execution.
