Richard Brinsley Sheridan

Richard Brinsley Sheridan, born October 1751 in County Dublin, Ireland, was a celebrated Anglo-Irish playwright and Whig politician who later became Treasurer of the Navy under Prime Minister Lord Grenville. He authored iconic works such as The Rivals and The School for Scandal, and his family home on Dorset Street stood in a fashionable Dublin neighbourhood before the family moved to England when he was seven. His father, Thomas Sheridan, had acted at the Smock Alley Theatre and later wrote about education, while his mother, Frances Sheridan, produced plays in London and wrote the novel The Memoirs of Miss Sidney Biddulph. Richard attended the English Grammar School in Grafton Street and later Harrow School, shaping the mind that would fill theatres and parliaments across Britain.
