Richard Bourke, 6th Earl of Mayo, was born in County Dublin, Ireland on 21 February 1822. He became the 4th Viceroy and Governor-General of India, serving from 12 January 1869 until his assassination on 8 February 1872. As the only Viceroy killed while in office, his life ended violently during an official visit to Port Blair.
