No one knows whether monks, merchants or children filled those shells. They knew hunger, heat and the weight of discarded things. The land kept what people believed worthless. Memory often begins inside the refuse others stopped noticing.

Test excavation (Licence no. 08E0058) was undertaken in advance of a proposed development on lands immediately S of Church road which forms part of St Colmcille’s ecclesiastical enclosure (DU011-034002). It revealed two shell middens associated with a fragment of worked antler which were identified and interpreted as indicative of occupation in the early medieval period (Myles 2008, 11).
