Moydrum Castle rose in 1814 as a gothic mansion for the Handcock family, whose lands stretched across fourteen square miles of Westmeath. On the night of 3 July 1921, IRA members knocked at the door, gave the women and servants inside a short grace to grab what they could carry, then drove them out and drowned the house in flame. The ruin still stands beside a small lake, ivy-strangled and empty, holding the heat of that final hour in its blackened bones.
