Templemichael Castle is a five-storey rectangular tower built by the FitzGerald family in the 16th century beside the Glendine River and Blackwater confluence. Oliver Cromwell attacked the place in 1649, perhaps destroying it then, while a ruined church and graveyard still stand nearby. The closure of that church in 1969 after the funeral of Horace Holroyd Smyth marks the end of its active life, leaving the castle and church to decay together in quiet company.
