Water mill

Abbeydorney Monastery (in ruins) (KE021-053001-) is situated half a mile NE of Abbeydorney village. Elizabeth I granted a lease of the abbey and its lands to the Earl of Desmond in 1576. By 1580 Desmond was an outlaw, and in 1581 Elizabeth granted the lease to Captain John Zouche. After changing hands several times, it was finally bought in 1601 by one of the Crosbie family for £130. He in turn sold it to David Crosbie of Ardfert in 1638. The property at that time consisted of '1 church, 2 churchyards, 2 acres arable, 1 water-mill (KEO21-053005-) and 170 acres in the parish' (Pierse 1976, 27). The Crosbies owned the land until this century when, under the Land Acts, it was purchased and leased to local landowners. The above description is derived from C.
