Buttercross, Pontefract, St Oswald's Cross, and Solomon Dupeer blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Buttercross Erected in 1734 to shelter people selling dairy produce. Replaced pre-Conquest St Oswald's Cross. Posthumous gift of Solomon Dupeer. Tradition asserts that Solomon Dupeer was responsible for betraying Gibraltar to the British in 1704. 18th century benches survive. Recorded plaque organisation: Rotary International.

Solomon Dupeer, posthumously credited with the erection of Buttercross in Pontefract in 1734, is traditionally alleged to have betrayed Gibraltar to the British in 1704, though his role remains controversial. The Buttercross replaced an earlier St Oswald's Cross and features surviving 18th-century benches.
