Holed stone in Unknown

Holed stone

What is recorded here

Holed stone in Unknown stands west of Adare village, embedded in a rude limestone slab. It escaped Westropp’s hurried inspection in 1921, preserving its mystery rather than solving it. The hole may have marked a boundary, tested a vow or simply mocked human certainty.
The only information available on this monument is a note by Westropp (1921, 183) which states that 'the Rev. Mr. Orpen called my attention to the existence of a holed stone to the west of Adare village, in a rude slab of limestone. Unfortunately, I had not time to examine it.' The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
