Rath Packing Company in Waterloo, Iowa, became the nation's largest meatpacking facility by 1941, surviving two world wars and the depression with profits in most years. The plant's size and output made it a regional anchor, but its four-story layout and rising labor costs later worked against it. When workers took control in 1980, they inherited an industry already shifting to single-level plants and thinner margins. Rath closed in 1985, leaving behind a place where scale once meant strength but later revealed how quickly advantage can disappear.
