House

Situated in the N half of the inner enclosure at Cahercommaun (CL010-064003-) and conjoined with another hut site at W (CL010-064089-; Hencken 1938, 2, structure 5). A poorly constructed curvilinear house (diam. c. 6m) with a hearth (Hencken 1938, 2, structure 6) forming part of a cellular complex. Hencken noted that this structure was most likely occupied by the ‘chief’. From the point of view of attack this was the safest part of the fort possibly explaining why the principal dwellings where located there (Cotter 1999, 66). Five steps lead down to a Man-made underground passage (CL010-064077-). Cahercommaun is a national monument in State care.
