Hut site in Tuar An Chladáin

In S facing, open mountain terrain between Coomacarrea and Meenteog, on the N side of the Owroe river valley. A cluster of eight huts occur on a terraced ledge. The hut at N (KE081-001002-) is the best preserved; it is of corbelled drystone construction and features an entrance passage at NE. D: 2.4m. H: 1.4m. T: 1.1m. Immediately on its NE side is the entrance to a triple roomed semi-subterranean chamber. The corbelled drystone chambers, roofed with lintels, extend to W, N and E, and average 2.2m long, 1m high and 1m wide. This complex is locally known as Uaigh an Duine. It is also called Clochán na gCaorach (information: B. Ó Cíobháin). The remainder of the huts (KE081-001003-) are in a poor state of preservation, surviving one to two courses high and ranging in diameter from 2m to 6m. They occupy an area 40m in extent, E-W, below the hut at N. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J.
