Townley Hall

Detached three-bay single-storey stone gate lodge, built c. 1820. Tetrastyle pedimented portico to north on Greek Doric columns. Pitched slate roof, lead ridge, cut stone raking cornice to north forming pediment to portico, cast-iron gutters on corbelled eaves course, circular cast-iron downpipes. Random rubble walling, dressed limestone ashlar walling to north, dressed quoins. Square-headed window openings, stone sills; block-and-start brick jambs with gauged brick flat-arched lintels to east. Square-headed door opening to north, moulded stone surround, timber four-panel door. Random rubble footbridge to north with soldier coping. Set to west of gateway to south-east of Townley Hall.

This gate lodge, built in the form of a miniature Greek temple, provides a striking entrance to Townley Hall demesne. It exhibits high quality stonework, particularly in the execution of the portico and, though no longer in use, it survives as an important feature within the estate, forming an attractive group with its associated gateway and supplying an insight into a past society.
