Kells upper by. Monday 16:35-18:05. A tall sandstone slab stands against the church porch, its double ring marked with Maltese crosses and an interlaced R above the dial. People once read the passing day from that stone before written hours crowded the sky. The unfinished gnomon hole still hints at a shadow long gone, leaving the parish to imagine the hand that cut it.

From Bradley and King (1985, 1, 82) Sundial. A sandstone sundial (Wth 0.64m; H 1.6m; T 0.12m) is placed against the S wall of the church porch. The dial (diam. 0.32m) is incised on one end and consists of a double ring divided into four quarters by lines which extend beyond the outer ring and terminate in Maltese crosses. These quarters are further divided into 8 divisions while the outer ring is divided into 8 sections. The gnomon hole is not completely perforated. An interlaced letter R is incised above the sundial. This type of sundial is known as a scratch dial and dates from the thirteenth to the late fifteenth century. See the attached image. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 2 July, 2014
