Medieval Cistercian monks built an abbey on that Comber spot, then a modern Church of Ireland church replaced the ruined abbey. The monastery gave up its identity but the location kept serving worship. Something continuous survives underneath the changed building, even when the name and ritual changed.

The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CISTERCIAN ABBEY (site of), now modern C of I church (c.f. HB 24/15/2). Recorded period: MEDIEVAL; MODERN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
