Chapelizod wore a stone wall around its shoulders until the early 1600s, when its east gate still stood. A square two-storey house at the corner of St Martins Row may have grown from that defence line, its chamfered edge and lion tablet waiting beneath later paint. The wall has vanished, but the house still holds its shape like a forgotten sentinal.

The medieval town of Chapelizod was surrounded by a wall. It was still standing at the beginning of the 17th century as the E gate of the town is mentioned (Ball 1906, 165). The only possible building associated with the defences may be a two-storey, square house at the corner of St Martins Row. This has a chamfered corner to first floor level with traces of moulding painted over. On the N face is a tablet with a lion rampant and a moulding, which formerly contained a motto above it. The windows in the building are peculiarly arranged as if later inserted. This may be a medieval building.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
