Peppercombe Castle was a castellated seaside villa built by William Tardrew soon after 1810, named for the Iron Age camp on the headland above. It stood among lime kilns and stonebreaker huts until cliff subsidence cracked it in 1909. The roof was removed, swift decay followed, and the lawns reverted to hay meadow. What remains is a ghost in the valley, remembered only through the castle bungalow that once served as a boat-house before moving upstream.
